Before diving into the company culture quotes, I want to take a moment to answer a few common questions that I often get when it comes to workplace culture.

What is Workplace Culture?

Workplace culture is the collective personality of an organization. It’s the sum of the values, traditions, beliefs, interactions, behaviors, good leadership and attitudes that make up a great company culture. Imagine walking into an office and feeling the vibe – that’s the culture. It’s how people treat each other, the company’s mission and values in action, and even the physical space you work in. It’s what makes a company unique and can significantly impact employee happiness and productivity. Think of it as the invisible hand guiding how things get done around there.

Keep this in mind, the best culture is made up with the right people with strong personal values. This includes team members who often have new ideas, strong core values, welcome honest feedback, and WANT to contribute to a great culture. This team also includes leaders who don’t instill fear of retaliation, value people of diverse perspectives, and have a true emotional commitment to employee satisfaction.

Why is Workplace Culture So Important?

Everyone wants to work at a great place with great people. There are important elements in workplace culture that contribute to this. So what does a company’s culture have to do with this? The workplace culture is the backbone of any organization. It’s crucial because it directly affects employee engagement, job satisfaction, and overall performance. A positive culture fosters a sense of belonging, which boosts morale and motivates employees to give their best.

On the flip side, a toxic culture can lead to high turnover, burnout, and disengagement. Essentially, a strong, positive culture can be a competitive advantage, helping attract top talent and retain employees. It’s the difference between a thriving workplace and one where people are just clocking in and out. When the culture aligns with employees’ values and expectations, magic happens – people feel valued, supported, and inspired.

How Can I Fix or Improve Workplace Culture?

Fixing or improving workplace culture is not a one-person show. If you try to do it alone, it will just lead to burnout and frustration. Improving workplace culture starts with leadership and commitment to change the organization’s makeup. This may include encouraging the personal evolution of each person in the organization.

It doesn’t happen overnight and requires ongoing effort and a genuine commitment to creating an environment where everyone can thrive. I recommend hiring a professional organizational development consultant and a Leadership Coach (like me) to come in and help. They can be your secret weapon in creating a positive company culture.

I should also mention that the hallmark of a health creative culture because with leaders who have great qualities. If you are a current leader and looking to make improvements, check out my recent article, How to be a Good Leader (9 Essential Traits).

Now let’s dive into the good stuff!

Best Quotes on Workplace Culture

“Are you helping or are you hurting?”

-Chelsea Jay
workplace culture quotes for leaders

There are only two types of leaders.

Those who help and those who hurt.

Which one are you?

Which one are you working for?

“You’ll never be good at leading if you can’t recognize your own weaknesses.”

-Chelsea Jay
workplace culture quotes

There’s one trait that EVERY manager needs to have….

Drum roll please…

Self-awareness (a damn good high level of it!)

Managers and leaders need to understand how their subtle actions or habits can potentially affect and harm staff (sometimes unintentionally).

So in case you need examples… I’m going to lay them on you!

Here are 3 ways you can quickly destroy your employees engagement, commitment, and self-esteem at work.

1. “Joking” about their personality quirks, accent, a mistake they made, appearance, etc.
2. Blowing off concerns or ideas when they are brought to you.
3. Not provide constructive feedback and instead compare their work to their coworkers… or… completely redo the project yourself.

I’ve seen these actions from managers over and over again in the workplace. Many times, it becomes a natural habit which minimizes the awareness of it.

If you are a manager (or an aspiring manager) you owe it to yourself, your staff, and your company to work on character flaws that may impact, influence, or harm others negatively.

P.S. If you realize you’ve done any of these…. it’s never too late to apologize.

“Your comment could be the one that sends someone over the edge.”

-Chelsea Jay
quotes-on-workplace-culture-leader

Here are the top 9 phrases that I classify as gaslighting, out of touch, and privileged.

“You should be happy you have a job.”

“That’s a great company, just make it work.”

“If you don’t want your job, give it to me, I’ll happily take it.”

“It can’t be that bad.”

“You’re overreacting.”

“You’re just being ungrateful.”

“Get over it.”

“I’m sorry you feel that way.”

“I’ve never had anything like that happen to me.”

Just because you haven’t seen or experienced someone else’s story doesn’t give you a right to diminish, shame, or dismiss it.

If you don’t want to hear someone’s experience, simply say, “I’m probably not the best person to discuss this with and can’t give you the guidance you need.”

If you’re open to the conversation, just listen and ask how you can help and support.

Be kind to each other. People struggling in toxic environments and draining environments is more common than you think.

“To be a good leader, you have to be good on the inside.”

-Chelsea Jay

By that I mean…

You are confident in the value you bring.
You’re content/happy with your career.
You know your strengths and weaknesses.
You’ve overcome most of your insecurities.
You have a strong moral compass.

If you have these, you’ll have no reason to…

Pick apart others.
Be in competition with your staff.
Be jealous of other high performers.
Prove that you’re the best.

Instead you will be able to…

Support others.
Uplift others.
Let others shine.

That’s how real leadership is built!

“The best managers welcome opposing views.”

– Chelsea Jay
workplace culture- opposing views

You know you’re a good manager when your employees…

Can tell you when you’re wrong.

Feel comfortable with disagreeing with you.

Don’t have to justify or explain their PTO request.

Don’t fear retaliation.

Do not walk around on eggshells with you.

Feel comfortable sharing their career goals and aspiration.

Allow you to get to know them.

Are you a good manager?

“If you can’t serve, you can’t lead.”

– Chelsea Jay
culture quotes for the workplace

Bad bosses exist because most people think being a manager is simply telling everyone what to do…

The foundation of good management is serving.

Your team.
Your colleagues.
And your company.

So what does that look like?

Listening
Advocating
Defending
Uplifting
Inspiring
Encouraging
Leaning in
Helping

If those traits don’t come easy or leaders refuse to learn them, toxic environments and draining cultures will always exist.

So what can we do?

Encourage, coach, train, and empower more servers to land leadership roles.

“Bad days are normal, taking your bad days out on others isn’t.”

– Chelsea Jay

You’re probably working with someone who is on the verge of a mental breakdown.

So before you…

Throw them under the bus.
Gossip about them.
Send a nasty email.
Accuse them of not doing their job.
CC’ing everyone and their mother.

Remember, you never know what someone is going through.

Choose kindness.
Choose to forgive.
Choose to be optimistic.
Choose to offer grace.

Choose to be the person that makes their day a little easier.

Don’t take your bad day out on someone else.

“Don’t be the person who pushes someone over the edge.”

– Chelsea Jay
inspirational-workplace-culture-quote

Before you send that nasty email…

👉🏾 Shoot down someone’s idea.
👉🏾 Pick apart your colleagues work.
👉🏾 Throw your coworker under the bus.
👉🏾 Avoid eye contact/acknowledgement when you walk by someone in the office.
👉🏾 Embarrass a team member publicly.
👉🏾 Make an offensive joke.

Or

👉🏾 Say a sarcastic remark.

Remember,

Everyone is fighting unspoken battles, struggles, challenges in their personal life.

Don’t let your jab be the one that pushes someone over the edge.

Be kind.
Call out bad behavior.
Show grace to yourself and others.

Not just today, but EVERY DAY ❤️

“The minimum requirement should always be respect and kindness.”

– Chelsea Jay
workplace-culture-inspire-quotes

At this point every job posting should list kindness and respect under minimum requirements.

From interviewing to onboarding to layoffs to professionals leaving….

Everyone deserves to be treated like a human.

The ghosting.
Blindsiding.
Withholding information.
Gossiping.
Belittling.
False promises.

All of it has to stop.

The workplace should not feel like prison.
It shouldn’t feel like high-school.

And it definitely should give you side effects such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

So what do you think?

Can we make treating each other with dignity, kindness, and respect the new normal in the workplace? (And beyond!)

“Be the person you once needed.”

– Chelsea Jay

Speak up, even when you’re scared.

Use your voice, even when others are silent.

Call out I justices when you see them, even if they don’t affect you.

Just be THAT PERSON.

I promise, you’ll help more people than you can ever imagine.

So now my question to you is…. how are you using your voice or your power?

“Protect your employees that choose to speak up.”

– Chelsea Jay
workplace quotes

If employees aren’t comfortable giving feedback, suggestions, or constructive criticism about your management style, you’re fostering a culture based on fear, intimidation, and mistrust.

Real leaders are self-reflective.
Real leaders ask for feedback.
Real leaders listen, learn, and take action to become better.

That’s all, that’s the post.

I hope this reminder was helpful ❤️

“Your employees shouldn’t have to “heal” after working for you.”

– Chelsea Jay
culture quotes

Reminder: don’t be the person that other people need to “heal” from.

No one dreams of going into the workplace and being…

Belittled
Harassed
Gaslit
Downplayed
Embarrassed
Drained
Stressed
Broken

Yet so many professionals across the globe deal with this on a regular basis.

If employees have to go on a healing journey after working for you…. you my friend are the problem.

That’s right,

It’s not the market.
It’s not the generation.
It’s not the “world we live in today.”

IT’S YOUR CULTURE.

The truth is… you can turn it around IF you’re willing to do the hard work… but that’s a different post for a different day 💯

“A positive, healthy, and safe work environment should be a basic human right.”

“Good managers shouldn’t be rare.”

– Chelsea Jay
workplace culture quotes

90% of professionals I’ve coached have told me, “having a good manager is rare.”

It makes me sad because it proves these 3 things…

The wrong people are promoted.
Managers lack consistent training and support.
Management has gained a bad reputation.

All of these are preventable.

So here’s a PSA to companies…

Invest in leadership development.
Invest in professional development opportunities for your staff.
Support the people you hire and promote.

That is all.

“If you can’t be you, the environment is not for you.”

– Chelsea Jay

“You cannot fix a toxic environment.”

– Chelsea Jay

On your own…

Company culture is a collaborative effort.

It is not one persons job to create, maintain, or change it. It is a team effort!

From….

The President
Senior Executives
Board Members
Managers
Support staff

Everyone plays a role…

Trying to do it on your own is a quick way to burnout… trust me, this is not the time to be a sacrificial hero.

If you can’t get buy-in, support, and help from the team….

It may be time to start planning your exit.

For your peace, mental health, and wellbeing.

“Relationships over Results.”

– Chelsea Jay
workplace culture

This is where managers make their biggest mistake…

Prioritizing results over relationships.

Are results and metrics important… sure!

But what’s more important?

The relationships you develop with your team.

Why?

Strong relationships build trust, collaboration, and innovation.

Which leads to…

Better results and long-term successes.

Your people aren’t robots.

Give your people…

The “why” behind the tasks.
Respect.
Trust.
Opening ear for feedback and ideas.

And your results will come…

Every. Single. Time

So what are you prioritizing?

Relationships or results?

“Respect isn’t earned through fear.”

– Chelsea Jay

“Your comfort zone is your career’s biggest enemy.”

– Chelsea Jay

Here’s how you can embrace discomfort and accelerate your growth…

👉🏾 Take Risks: Stepping out of your comfort zone often leads to new opportunities and personal growth.

👉🏾 Learn from Failure: View failures as learning experiences that can help you grow and improve.

👉🏾 Say “Yes” even when you’re afraid: The opportunities you say yes to will not only build your skillset, but position you for additional opportunities.

The moment you become complacent in your career and stop looking for opportunities to grow is the moment you wave goodbye to promotions, new roles, and additional opportunities.

Walking outside of your comfort zone positions you as a top candidate for new roles, projects, and partnerships.

When is the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone? How did you grow from it?

“The way you treat your employees is your brand.”

– Chelsea Jay

Promote internally.
Support work/life balance.
Pay your employees.
