“Show me your team and I can tell you what type of leader you are”– Chelsea Jay
Why is leadership important? I’m excited to talk about this topic with you. As someone who has been a leader at all levels, worked in toxic environments, and worked for a variety of leadership styles, I know firsthand the importance of leadership.
As a Leadership Coach today, I always stress the reality of how empowering or dangerous leadership can be. It’s important to remember that leadership is more than just a role or a title; it is the backbone of an organization. At its core, leadership is about influencing, inspiring, and guiding others toward a common goal. It’s the fuel that shapes culture, drives change, and propels organizations forward.
So why is leadership important? In this article, we’ll explore the fundamental aspects of leadership, its distinct features, and why it’s indispensable for organizational success, professional growth, and personal fulfillment. Before diving in, we need to make sure we’re on the same page. Let’s begin by talking about what leadership is.
What is Leadership?
Leadership is the art of creating continuous buy-in through inspiration, motivation, communication, and encouragement. Yes, you need to have all 4 to succeed as a leader. What does buy-in look like? It looks like the ability to motivate a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.
This definition encompasses the ability to make informed decisions, provide clear directions, and set the tone for a team or organization (what’s acceptable and what’s unacceptable). I should also mention that leadership isn’t confined to those at the top of an organization; it can be demonstrated by anyone who influences and inspires others, regardless of their position. If you don’t remember anything else from this article, remember this… you do not have to have a leadership position or official title to lead. In fact, As a Career and Leadership Coach, I’ve met incredible leaders across the world who didn’t have the management title.
What does Leadership Look Like?

Leadership can and will look different depending on the person, the situation, and the level of experience. For example, some leaders are charismatic and outgoing, with the ability to use their charm and energy to inspire others.
Others who may be introverted are more reserved, leading through quiet strength and thoughtful decision-making. Effective leadership is adaptive and situational, always aligning with the needs of the team and the challenges at hand. It involves active listening, empathy, accountability, and a relentless commitment to personal and team growth.
At the core of leadership is the ability to lift others up, provide support and reassurance when your people need it the most.
What is the Difference between Leadership and Management?
If you’ve been in the workforce for more than 5 years, you’ve probably witnessed or directly experienced a the differences between a manager and a leader. Based on my experience, I have found that they are not the same.
While leadership and management are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct concepts. Managers tend to focus on maintaining systems, processes, and structures. Which involves planning, organizing, and coordinating resources to achieve specific objectives.
Leaders set a vision and inspire people to reach it. They are more people-focused and can see the big picture of how empowered people work to achieve better outcomes. Another example is that managers ensure the day-to-day operations run smoothly, while leaders drive change and innovation.
Please understand, that I’m not bashing the management aspect, I’m just showcasing the difference between management and leadership. The truth is a successful organization needs a balance of both effective management and inspiring leadership. From experience, I can tell you that managers are typically focused on managing policies, programs, and systems, while people management roles are better for leaders who thrive on inspiring, uplifting, and guiding others.
Reasons Why Leadership is Important

As mentioned earlier, leadership is the foundation and backbone of an organization. The right leadership will allow your organization and people to thrive consistently. We’re now going to take a look at the Top 9 Reasons Why Leadership is Important.
9 Reasons Why Leadership is Important
1. Leadership Shapes the Culture
Have you ever worked at a toxic organization? I hope not, but from experience, I can tell you that an organizational culture can either drain or energize you. This is because the culture is the lifeblood of any organization, and leadership plays a heavy role in shaping it.
Leaders set the tone through their actions, decisions, and communication styles. A leader who promotes openness, inclusivity, and respect fosters a positive work culture that can drive higher employee engagement, productivity, and better performance. On the other hand, a toxic leadership style can create a negative environment, leading to high turnover and low morale.
2. Leadership Influences the Actions of Others
Have you ever heard the phrase, “energy is contagious.” Anytime I enter a new environment, especially during a training or keynote, my first thought is to check my energy. As a leader, employees are looking to you to show them what behavior and actions are acceptable and what’s unacceptable.
All in all, leaders serve as role models, and their behavior influences the actions and attitudes of their followers. By demonstrating integrity, accountability, and resilience, leaders inspire their teams to adopt the same values. This ripple effect of positive behavior can enhance teamwork, drive performance, and create a cohesive and motivated workforce.
On the other hand, if a leader is short-tempered, jealous, combative, or thrives on conflict, you’ll find that employees are the same. They’ll foster an environment with hostile relationships, no trust, and an unhealthy competitive attitude. Ultimately leading to a draining and toxic work environment.
3. Leadership Impacts the Overall Health and Growth of the Organization
Ever wonder why some organizations thrive, while others struggle? Strong leadership is critical for the health and growth of an organization. Leaders make strategic decisions that steer the organization towards its goals. They are able to identify opportunities for growth, manage risks, and allocate resources effectively. With visionary leadership, organizations can innovate, expand, and achieve sustainable success.
Leadership is a crucial role that also contributes to the growth because it impacts the company’s reputation. Whether its hiring new talent, finding partnerships, or looking for new contributors (i.e. board members) leadership can have a negative or positive impact on recruiting and building relationships with others.
I’ll give you an example. As a Career and Leadership Coach, I get to hear about my client’s leadership experiences with different companies. There are some companies that come up all the time. With this knowledge, I now have formed an opinion regarding the reputation of the company. So, what do you think I do? I don’t necessarily tell people not to work there, but I do tell them to do their research and find current employees to talk to. In turn, current and previous employees tell others to stay far away. This type of reputation damages the overall growth of the company.
4. Leadership Shapes Employee Experience

Similar to my explanation for the culture and health of the organization is employee experience and employee morale. Employee experience is significantly influenced by the quality of leadership. Leaders who are supportive, communicative, and empathetic create an environment where employees feel valued and motivated. This positive experience can lead to higher job satisfaction, increased loyalty, and better overall performance.
With knowing how much money turnover costs a company, I believe that there should be a heavy emphasis placed on coaching and development for current and aspiring leaders. In fact, my professional development trainings focus on teaching business leaders how to build strong relationships and positively influence company culture. After all, retention is the name of the game and retaining top talent begins with creating a positive employee experience.

5. Leadership Determines the Direction of the Organization
I didn’t understand the phrase, “the buck ends with you,” until I became an Executive Director. In today’s workforce, it is truer than ever. Leaders are the architects of an organization’s future, meaning they are in charge of steering the ship.
They do this by communicating a compelling vision, setting strategic goals, and guiding their teams towards achieving them. Effective leaders are also able to navigate challenges, adapt to changing environments, and ensure that the organization remains on course to achieve its long-term objectives.
When leaders are displaying these actions and steering the ship, they automatically provide their staff with the confidence and reassurance to follow, support, and stand behind the mission and their efforts.
6. Leadership Drives Innovation
Creativity and innovation are a major part of progress, keeping up, and staying ahead of trends and best practices within the industry. Leaders have the power to create an environment that encourages creativity and risk-taking. By fostering a culture that values new ideas and rewards innovation, leaders can drive significant advancements and keep the organization competitive.
I’ve seen the differences first-hand. I’ve worked in organizations where leaders took pride in shaming others for their ideas if they didn’t agree with them. Guess what this did? It suppressed everyone and created a culture of fear. No one was inspired to think, come up with new ideas, or contribute for fear of being embarrassed.
On the other hand, I’ve worked for leaders who were extremely encouraging and wanted to hear new ideas and opinions. This resulted in becoming an industry leader and building a positive brand that created a competitive applicant pool whenever we had openings.
7. Leadership Facilitates the Acceptance of Change
This year, I presented to a lot of employers on this topic…. Drumroll please… how to handle change as a leader! Here’s the thing, change is inevitable, and how an organization handles change can determine its success or failure.
Leaders play a major role in guiding their teams through transitions. They communicate the vision, address concerns, and provide the support needed to embrace change. Effective change management minimizes disruptions and ensures a smooth transition.
It’s important to remember that as a leader, your employees are watching you. If you give off “nervous or negative energy” guess what they’ll do? They’ll observe it and behave accordingly. This can result in them complaining about the change, resisting it, and refusing to deal with it.
8. Leadership Builds Trust and Credibility
Trust is the foundation of any successful relationship, and it is no different within an organization. In today’s workplace, employees want to work for people that they feel are genuine and honest. Leaders who are transparent, consistent, and fair build trust and a strong bond with their teams. This trust fosters a collaborative environment where employees feel safe toexpress their ideas and concerns, leading to better teamwork and problem-solving.
9. Leadership Promotes Professional and Personal Growth
I’ve always said, your leader is the bridge between you and your career goals. Effective leaders invest in the development of their team members. They provide opportunities for learning, offer constructive feedback, and mentor individuals to reach their full potential. This commitment to growth not only enhances individual capabilities but also strengthens the organization as a whole.
Bonus: it also builds retention and a smarter, innovative, creative, and inspired workforce!
So, what is the bottom line?
Leadership can make or break your career AND it can make or break an organization. In fact, they play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of the organization. Leaders can either inspire, motivate, move forward, and uplift you and the company or it can cause everything to crumble. This is why it’s important to identify the right people during the hiring process.
